Average house price passes £200k mark

THE average price of a home in the Lothians has passed £200,000 for the first time, new figures from the Registers of Scotland have revealed.

Property prices in the Lothians continue to rise despite uncertainty in the market and are 13.4 per cent higher than at the same point last year, a slightly steeper rise than in Scotland as a whole.

The average price of a Scottish home is now £159,981, more than £40,000 cheaper than the Lothians average of £205,849, which is the highest in Scotland.

Ron Smith, chief executive of the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre (ESPC), said: "There's still a lot of value in the market. Edinburgh is seen as a nice place to live, it's a growing city, and it's only got so far it can expand into.

"As people are finding the city more expensive there is a ripple effect and prices will increase as more people look further afield in terms of affordability."

The total value of sales across Scotland registered during the quarter was £6.8 billion, an increase of £900m.
